World Quality Day (#WQD17) was created in 1989 by the American Society for Quality, the European Organization for Quality, and the Union of Japanese Scientists and Engineers. It aims to increase worldwide awareness of the important contribution that quality makes towards organizational and national growth and prosperity. It is a special day to celebrate achievements and raise awareness of the impact that quality can have on human life. In November each year, businesses around the world take part in a variety of activities such as seminars, presentations, quizzes and competitions. Events are often organized by in-house quality professionals and are designed to communicate the importance of quality to their non-quality-professional colleagues. The theme of 2017 is “Everyday Leadership” (#EverydayLeadership17), chosen to recognize quality professionals at all levels who display excellence in leadership behavior. Everyday leaders who exhibit the values of the quality profession show clarity of purpose, a focus on stakeholders, a commitment to doing things properly, and a passion for continuous improvement.
WHAT IS QUALITY .... AND WHY DOES IT MATTER?

WHAT ARE THE MAIN DEVELOPMENTS IN 2017?
The big topic for 2017 in quality circles is the ISO transitions. The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is an independent, international, non-governmental organization that develops voluntary, consensus-based, market-relevant international standards for products, services and systems, to ensure quality, safety and efficiency. ISO has published more than 21,000 international standards, covering almost every industry. These standards are continually revised and, to continue to enjoy the benefits of ISO certification, companies are required to make the transition to updated standards as new specifications become available. Several major standards have recently been updated: ISO 9000, ISO 14000, IATF 16949 (specific to the automotive industry), and EN/AS/JISQ 9100 (specific to aerospace). Organizations already certified, or seeking certification, have to transition to the new standards by September 2018.
ISO 9000 is a standard for quality management systems, and its recent evolution will raise questions for many organizations. Many will need to develop new dimensions of their management systems and they will all have to manage their transition thoroughly and consistently.
To stay competitive in a world where consumers are increasingly vigilant as to the environmental responsibility of their suppliers, organizations need to have an effective environmental management system (EMS). ISO 14000 helps demonstrate an organisation’s commitment to limiting their environment impact using a proven framework. The benefits of a good EMS include cost control through the conservation of materials and energy, reduction of incidents that result in liability claims, and compliance with legal requirements.
IATF 16949 is the only international standard for quality management systems in the automotive industry. Through this certification, any organization active in the automotive supply chain can demonstrate their ability to anticipate and manage changes, and maintain reliable industrial processes for customer satisfaction.
In the aerospace industry, quality is a matter of life and death. Aircraft manufacturers and equipment manufacturers require their suppliers to have processes under control, understand customers’ requirements, and focus on continuous improvement. The latest version of the 9100 standard emphasizes risk management and continuous improvement approaches.
